Redneck Muslim: A Film Screening and Discussion

Join us on Saturday, June 30th at 6PM for the screening of Redneck Muslim, with special guest speaker, Shane Atkinson!

What: Redneck Muslim: A Film Screening and Discussion
When: Saturday, June 30th 6PM
Where: Main Hall; Ta'leef Chicago
Cost:$10/person
Babysitting (Ages 2 and Above): $5/child

ABOUT THE FILM

Redneck Muslim follows the life and work of Shane Atkinson, the first Muslim chaplain in-training at North Carolina’s biggest trauma center and founder of the "Society of Islamic Rednecks.”

A 45-year old, white “good old boy” who converted to Islam in 1999, Shane pursued a new career as a chaplain after his family suffered a devastating loss. In the hospital he works in a team of inter-faith chaplains to offer services to all patients and families – regardless of their religious affiliations. Recently Shane founded the Society of Islamic Rednecks to celebrate Southern culture while countering stereotypes of Muslims and to propose a
reformed vision of “redneck” identity that strips itself of racism and sexism and embraces diversity.

This short film follows Shane with his colleagues and patients, his friends and family, and to a national gathering of prominent African American Muslim leaders as he seeks their counsel about his project.

Redneck Muslim explores the intersection of American Muslim and Southern “redneck” cultures, opening an urgently needed cross-cultural inquiry about racial justice at a time of deep polarization and increasingly strident white nationalism.

A Message from the Filmmakers

As long-time friends and collaborators alarmed by the rise of anti-Muslim and racist politics, attitudes and actions in the current atmosphere of increasing polarization, we made Redneck Muslim to explore how our realities are always way more complicated than the labels we put on ourselves and others. We hope Redneck Muslim will encourage people to engage in the pursuit of racial justice and equity for all, and to think and talk across the lines that are dividing us. We think Shane shows some great examples of how he crosses those lines – with more questions than answers – and with sincerity, love, and optimism that we can all be better people.

Digital Detox

Join meditation instructor and psychotherapist Micah Anderson for Ta'leef's 2nd Annual Digital Detox Daylong meditation retreat.

In today’s world, mindlessness is increasingly running rampant; our days are filled with multi-tasking and use of technology—all with a "get it done" attitude—which can lead to the sense that we are floating through life on auto-pilot rather than being actively engaged in what is happening. This has driven us to be disconnected from the world in which we live, despite all the technological advances that would like to tell us otherwise.

This 6-hour daylong will offer its participants the chance to unplug for the day, allowing space to slow down, practice self-awareness, and take a good look at our relationships with the Divine, ourselves, and technology.

—Learn mindful grounding techniques in times of stress,

—Set boundaries around use of technology,

—Understand how to build a simple, yet effective, self-care regimen specifically related to technological age

Meditation sessions will take place throughout the day, as well as silent journaling, group sharing and reflection, and didactic sessions on how to stay whole and connected to both God and ourselves in an increasingly fragmented world.

No phones, screens, social networking, or internet will be allowed at this event. This daylong does require full attendance and participation. Latecomers will be asked to wait until the current session is over to enter the main hall. By disconnecting from technology, we can learn how we can re-connect with ourselves and ultimately the creator. Please join us for this unique opportunity!

SPIRITUAL BYPASSING

The term spiritual bypassing is defined as using spiritual ideas and practices to sidestep or avoid facing unresolved emotional issues, psychological wounds, and unfinished developmental tasks. Those engaged in it often do so unaware, using spiritual practices to numb themselves or to avoid whats real, rather than offering a more grounded “radically alive and naturally integral” spirituality.

This daylong course, taught by mindfulness teacher Micah Anderson, will teach the basics of this common pitfall. The course will use the text, Spiritual Bypassing: When Spirituality Disconnects Us from What Really Matters by Robert Augustus Masters, PhD., and will offer readings, discussions, and guided meditations to help us understand this important concept.
