Message from the Board of Directors
It is our honor and privilege to write to you on behalf of our Founding Director, Usama Canon. We are indebted to him for his service and contributions over the past 12 years to Ta’leef Collective and the broader community. It is with great appreciation that we announce that Usama will be taking a one-year sabbatical from Ta’leef beginning December 2017. This is in recognition of, and with gratitude for, more than a decade of his teaching, community-building, and leadership. Our staff and team look forward to continuing this beautiful work called Ta’leef, with Usama's ongoing vision and contributions at hand.
It is also with a heavy heart that we share the news that our beloved teacher, Usama Canon, was diagnosed this past week with ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. With his earned sabbatical leave in place, Usama will be taking time to focus on his health and spend time with his family. Usama has shared with us that he is still completely mobile, and has begun diligently seeking treatment for this illness.
For anyone who would like to offer prayers or send messages of support to Usama Canon and his family, we invite you to use this online web portal, both now and in the coming months and years: loveforusamacanon.org. This comes with an additional loving request for privacy for Usama and his family, as they move with intention into a sabbatical period.
We want to end by reaffirming our enduring commitment to Ta’leef Collective, which has been—by God's grace—a dream come true and a culmination of the efforts of hundreds of teachers, volunteers, donors, and beneficiaries worldwide, as well as dedicated teams in Fremont and Chicago. This work is critical to serving our community. We are ready to step up as needed to move Ta’leef into this new chapter alongside our Founder, following his legacy and his extraordinary example.
We invite you to stay in touch with the staff, teachers, and leadership team of Ta’leef, and hope you will check back with us in the coming weeks and months for more announcements on new ways to continue to support both the work of Ta’leef Collective and our Founder Usama, whom we thank for his boundless love and service.
With love and gratitude,
Ta’leef Collective Board of Directors
