Founder’s Footsteps

As salam alaikum —

All praise is due to Allah, the most Gracious, the most Merciful. Since the news of my diagnosis, hundreds of messages and prayers have poured in, with love and support from people and communities around the world. My family and the entire team at Ta’leef are overwhelmed with gratitude and renewed energy to be relentless in our service to one another and to Allah. When we started Ta’leef twelve years ago, we never imagined how much it would grow.  I’m inspired to see the work continuing at Ta’leef, and in communities across the country and around the world.

Many have asked what they can do to help. Although our individual lives are ever-changing, this important work must continue, which is why I'm excited to announce the launch of the Ta'leef Collective Legacy Fund, which has been formed in direct response to the overwhelming offers of support to ensure we sustain and grow the reach and impact of Ta'leef for years to come.

Ta'leef has been built upon the hard-work and dedication of so many teachers, volunteers, supporters and beneficiaries. As I transition into a year-long sabbatical, I am confident in the ongoing possibilities of Ta’leef’s work and its ability to meet the needs of our community. I am overjoyed and humbled to announce the hire of a full-time Executive Director, Diane Stair, who will be working alongside me to do this critical work. Diane has been a role model and mentor to me, has served Ta’leef on our Board of Directors, and is committed to helping the legacy of Ta’leef outlive us all, God-willing.

In honor of that legacy, I invite you to support and celebrate the work of Ta'leef, with hope and joy for the future. Please join us over the course of the next few weeks, as we share some of the beautiful programmatic highlights and benchmarks from 2017 that we hope to carry into next year. May Allah bless your homes, and fill them with light, and may Allah heal our sick and give us success in this world and the next. I look forward to returning, God-willing in awe and humble service to you.

Your Brother,

Usama Canon
